I have a customer machine (WinXP Home) that has comcast cable internet. DHCP
supplying everything successfully, including 3 DNS... Customer is able to
browse web using IP addresses only. None of his clients (web, mail, news)
are able to resolve names. I disabled Firewall...

Comcast tech support and I went through the process (flushdns, netsh,
etc)... have removed and reinstalled NIC. No changes.

I can ping all DHCP supplied IP's---Gateway, DHCP, nameservers.

Is it possible to have a corrupt resolver?

It could be 3rd party security software. Have you tried clean boot? or these
search results may help too.

Hi Bob,
I disabled all Firewall software...

Able to ping all DHCP supplied addresses: gateway (router) pings
DHCP server pings
All 3 DNS servers ping
Comcast website can be browsed using IP address in IE address bar

No email clients work using names: ie: mail.domain.com

removed and reinstalled NIC

This appears to be a NAME RESOLUTION issue -- clients appear to not be
requesting DNS name resolution.

I have downloaded winsockfix but unsure whether to use it... I got a
virus(trojan) alert from AVG after clicking a link from chicagotech.net...

nslookup showed the ip of dhcp assigned nameserver

He tells me this problem started right after using a registry cleaner
tool... I tried to do system restore to just prior but system restore would
not work.

I believe something in the tcp/ip stack is corrupt...
