Internal webserver unresponsive

Our company has an internal website on a Win 2000 Server we use for
accessing technical information, vacation requests, etc.

The website stops dead for no apparent reason. Memory and CPU utilization
levels are normal and there are no mysterious processes running in Task
Manager. I have completely disabled all anti-virus software. We also did a
complete re-install of the OS and applications less than two months ago.

Restarting the www service temporarily helps, but often the service won't
stop and I get a timeout message. Then I have to reboot the whole server.

This used to happen very infrequently, but it has already locked up several
times today.

I am not very well versed (read stupid) when it comes to debugging
applications; the dump files, etc are all very cryptic to me.

Help!

Is IIS logging any errors in the system or application log? You didn't
mention it but I'd check there first to see if there are any clues as to the
root cause of the problem.

Can the webserver be accessed at all - by ping, access to a fileshare, ftp?
Are the clients accessing it on the same subnet? If not what is between the
clients and server?

Next time it gets in that stat, try running IISState against the inetinfo or
dllhost process(es). If you post the log we may be able to tell you what
the problem is.

El Marko,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports. It runs as a Windows Service.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.
