Internal virus database

I have AVG free and have a message: Anti-virus: Internal virus database is
out of date. I have no idea what this means, so can anyone help me please?
My AVG is programmed to update daily which it does, and there are no new
updates. As you can tell, I am not 'computer literate'!! Any help, with
words of three syllables would be appreciated!
 
At times after an Anti Virus update the system needs to be rebooted....you
might have missed that notification.

A somewhat related question:

I also have AVG Free.
There's a new update at least once a day.
Does that mean that new viruses (sp) are discovered daily for which
AVG has to provide an antidote?

Yes, that's what it means (and yes, "viruses" is spelled correctly).

However note that today's new virus definitions are not for viruses
discovered today. They are for the viruses discovered a day or a few
days ago. There is always a lag time before the identification of a
new virus and your getting protection for it (whether you use AVG or
any other anti-virus program). That's the main reason why *no*
anti-virus program can ever offer perfect protection.

That stands to reason.
I still think that part of any anti-virus regime is to be aware and
use good judgment in opening whatever comes to your computer.

Absolutely right! It's probably the single most important factor.

Thank you Peter, but it has been there for a couple of days, so the p c has been turned on and off. It is because it is still there, even after two lots of updates that I posed the question.

Are you running the older 7.1 version of AVG?, if so you may need to
download and install the new 7.5 version. They are not supporting the
older version any more if I remember correctly so they may not be
issuing updates that will work with it. You can download the new 7.5
version from this link: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/special-get-isw-tpay/us/frt/0
 
Right click the AVG icon in the Notification area and choose "Check for
Updates".
