I just upgraded to xp, have a toshiba laptop computer.....my modem
works after i install the drivers but after i restart the computer i no
longer get a dialtone. I have to uninstall the driver and then restart
the computer afterwhich it detects the hardware, reinstalls the driver
and it works again....
Count yourself lucky that the driver got seated properly to the OS on only
the 2nd attempt. I have an HP multifunctional 2000 Series printer, and,
almost without exception, I need to install the driver a second time before
my WinXP accepts it. The number of times of first time success can be
counted in one hand in the mandatory printer reconnection following many a
clean install of WinXP. Driver installation, as in Windows update
installation, is tricky. You should observe and adhere to the strict guide
lines given; for example, at least in the case of my printer, all open
windows, i.e. those shown in the Notification Area and the Task Manager,
need to be closed. Many hours need not have been wasted looking for
correction of malfunction, had I been more disciplined right from the
beginning! It is certainly not the case of "Oh, well, it's only a
driver....!"
