Is there any way to disable the internal dhcp server ( the
one that assigns 169.254 addresses ). I have some software
that is reading it and I need to have it disabled so my
software reads my current conenction IP address.

thanks for helping this MS novice

It's called APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) and usually won't
be a problem, but can in some setups be a real pain.

"Change in DHCP Client Behavior in Windows 2000"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255836

Describes it and links to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;244268
which describes the registry change to disable it.

There are also APIPA KB articles on earlier Win9x systems and
probably XP (although it may be the same as W2K).
