Intermittent Recognition of second Hard Drive

More times than not, "my computer" does not show my second eide hard drive. When it is there, all data files are O.K
I power down and up. Sometimes this works. There are no CD discs or floppy disks in the removable drives when I power up. The problem appears to be getting worse. Before the failures began, I created and burned a 17 minute DVD disc over a 6 week period using the second drive. No problems then. Windows XP is up to date with latest update files. Machine is a Sony computer with second (non-Sony) EIDE controller and hard drive. I don't know what to try next.

Possibly bad connection?
Why do you need a second ide controller?

I did re-seat all connections. No extra IDE connections were available so I filled an empty PCI slot with a controller card that would handle very large hard drives. Capture and rendering of motion pictures requires many gigabytes of space. It worked for about 90 days without a failure.

If it worked ok for 90 days, prior to any problem, it might indicate a
problem with the controler card.
You say no extra ide connections available - does this mean you have
numerous ide devices? if so is yr pwr supply up to it?

DL, I did not think about power supplies. The second hard drive is the only "extra" device in the system. The Sony motherboard did not have any extra I/O connectors. That is why I bought the PCI card. The system is about 4 years old, so maybe the power supply can't handle.
Thanks for helping in the diagnosis.
