Intermittent noise from hard drive

I have a Seagate Barracuda 160GB hard drive.

It makes a noise when the computer is idle...this noise is
intermittent, the best way I can describe it that this noise sounds
like the noise it makes when the hard drive is being formatted.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Any ideas what this might be and
what might be causing this?

Its probably just moving the heads around to ensure that
they dont sit over the same track for too long when idle.

Presumably its in a situation where its easy to hear the noise.

You dont hear too many reports of that with that particular
drive. You do with the IBM/Hitachi 180GXPs tho.

If its very regular in time since the heads were idle, its likely just
the drive ensuring that it doesnt sit over the same spot for too long.

Formatting a drive shouldn't make any sounds (to speak of)
so that actually doesn't explain all that well what you hear.

Drives may do S.M.A.R.T. related tests when they have been idle for a certain time.

The intermittent noise I hear sounds like the buzzing sound a fly
makes when it is flying around.
