Have an intermittent networking problem. Dell 1.7 GH running Win XP
Pro. Ethernet connection to Linksys befw11s4 ver 1 then to Cox cable
modem. Usually for 4-5 hours I have normal connection to the Internet
via IE 6 and OE 6. Then I lose connectivity. However, other PCs
connected to the Linksys via wireless are UNAFFECTED.
Problems noticed in 2 ways:
1) IE browser fails. Cannot even access the Linksys router control
page, accessed by IP address. But can ping the router. Also can ping
my DNS servers at Cox on the network. Cannot access web sites by
entering IP addresses. Error at bottom of error page is "Cannot find
server or DNS error"

2) OE Express cannot check for new messages.
"TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server.
Account: xxxxx Server. 'pop.central.cox.net' Protocol POP3 Port 110
Secure(SSL): No, Error Number 0x800CCC15" But I can ping
cox.central.cox.net.

If I disable the network device via Windows and re-enable it no
change.

If I log off the user and log back on, everything starts working again
and will for several hours.

When I have the problem, run a IPCONFIG /all and compare to the same
command from when it is working fine - no differences noted.

When this happens I still have access to other computers on the
wireless to access their files. Happened when I was doing a file
transfer which was not affected.
Recently updated the Ethernet driver.
Recently removed the McAfee firewall software.

My problem appears to be resolved. It appears to have been caused by
the backdoor.hackarmy trojan. I didn't have it at my backup
11-28-2004. Can't tell exactly when I got it. Was using a different
antivirus. Now using the AVG free edition which found the trojan.
