Intermittent loss of Internet connection

Simple peer to peer set-up, 3 computers. NetGear Router,
static IP (works well under single user and modem) but
drops internet connection at different times.
Have tried changing MTU, different router, shared
connection. Any suggestions?

Which part drops the connection? Do all 3 computers lose
the connection, or just one?
Can any of the dropped computers ping a) the router, and
b) the other computers on the network?
