intermittent hard-drive noises

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 with Windows Vista Ultimate.

The hard-drive seems to never shut up. These are very soft noises, and are
really only audible when in a room with no other noise ( unless you put your
ear up against the case ).

I'm a little concerned because every laptop hard drive I've ever had fail
started by making intermittent noises ... which progressively got louder and
more frequent until drive failed.

Any ideas ?

Vista builds indices for the first few hours/days which keep the disk busy.
If they don't stop/slow down after the indices are finished you may be
swapping/paging which means you need more RAM but that is unlikely as you
appear to get 3G with that notebook.

A soft noise is more likely a fan. Give the system time to index and
profile. You didn't indicate how much memory you have but dennis assumes
that it is 3GB. If that is the case you will do well with Vista Ultimate
and your hdd.
