Intermittent Hang-up during Startup

I recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP. During
about 25% of the start-ups, the computer will hang-up,
sometimes with a repeating gong sound. Even the computer
power off switch will not shut down the system. The only
way to shut down and restart is to pull the power plug.
Restarts have all been good so far. Can anyone suggest a
way to fix this problem?

And how long did you press the power off button? It usually (with modern
computers) takes at least 5 sec to do something..
