Intermittent freezeups continue unabated

Ok - first I tried every software tweak imaginable: Kelly's and Doug's
included....then I reinstalled xp pro - a clean format of my main hard
drive. I removed all partitioning from master and slave drives. So then
tried 2 fans: extraction fan and another one pointed at the cpu and memory
sticks. I just tried a new power supply - same problem...intermittent
freezeups. No error message to speak of - just locks. This has been going on
for weeks. What next? Video card and sound card? Replace both at once or one
at a time?

Tom ,
I would guess that it would be more of a memory ram problem . If you have
more than one memory stick installed , remove one , then try it . Then do
the same for the other module. If you have only one , replace it with a name
brand (Muskin , Crucial or Samsung ) recommended by the motherboard
manufacturer. If this does not work , (but I think it will ) you just
increased the ram which is a good thing . Post back with results. Jym

Tom,
If you are crashing when you computer freezes due to an OS/Driver
problem minidumps will be created at c:\windows\minidump. If there are
minidumps located here please send (e-mail address removed) the 5-10 most recent
and I will look into what is causing your computer to crash. If the
minidump directory is empty your power supply and CPU are prime suspects for
causing a system to hang but not leave a minidump.

Thanks, Lance. I'll be back at my home pc (my problem one) early tomorrow
evening (et) and I'll post back with the result of my mini dump check. I'll
also email you the minidumps if there are any.

Check the 4 pin female power connectors for hard disks. The little female
connectors are really cheap and spread open, especially if a fan was tagged
in between the power connector and the hard drive. Get in with a tiny screw
driver or pick and close the female pins up a little, easiest to do right
where the split is. Make sure you do all 4 females on each of the hard
drive connectors starting from psu and moving to hdd's.

There are no minidumps. Would replacing the cpu be my next step? Other
hardware I haven't swapped out: video and sound cards.

Lets make sure creating minidumps wasn't disabled for some reason or
another. Right click on My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Startup
and Recovery Settings -> Make sure Write Debugging Information is set 'small
memory dump'.

If this is set correctly then it seems like your CPU would be the next place
to look. If this was set to something other than 'small memory dump' wait
for your computer to crash again and hopefully a minidump will be created
that I can look at.

There is a chance if you have Antivirus/Firewall software or something like
Norton Systemworks install that they could be causing the problem. I've
only heard of this happening never seen it myself. Hope this helped. Good
Luck.

Lance-

I went into the settings and it was set for "small memory dump." And I don't
have Norton installed - I use the old Inoculate, now called ETrust EZ AV
from computer associates. If you think the cpu would be next in line to
replace, I'll go ahead and try that. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Chris, but when I tried replacing the power supply, it still locked
up and that was with all new wiring with the new supply.
