INTERMITTENT CRASHES

Any help would be appreciated... about once maybe twice
a week my blue tool bar flickers black... the letters go
high contrast and a "zip" noise occurs and my settings
revert to the default bliss screen and icons. Has anyone
else experienced this? It has not corrupted any data
that i can see, but i'm pretty sure it's not a normal
event. any idea how to stop it? This has been going on
for over a year.All patches, fixes and updates are current

Run scan disk with all options in windows selected to fix any hard drive
errors after any major crash.
