Ben

Hi.. I connect to my Universities LAN from my room in
halls of residence. I log onto the intranet and internet
through internet explorer. I don't connect through a
proxy, as soon as I have logged on I am free to browse
the internet. I am also free to connect to MSN messenger
and windows media file streams. I cannot connect to FTPs,
Real Audio, winamp streams or peer 2 peer software. --
its as if im ok to do what i want providing the software
is microsoft.

Whenever I try to use software which isnt microsoft
based, for example Imesh, or Kazaa or FTP the connection
will just timeout. Can anyone shed light on what my
problem is and any sollutions?
my intentions are pure! thanks ben.

Ben, more than likely (without knowing particulars) the
University has restricted your access to only certain
protocols http and dns smtp for email?.

This was no doubt done for your safety to protect your
workstation from the perils of the internet and also
protect the universities bottom line for the cost of the
connection. Also stops fellow uni students from playing
hacker at sites across the internet.

Probably find your acceptable use agreement only allows you
access to the service for study anyway.
