So basically Micro$hit can't build a better OS, so instead they are
trying to sell a subscription-based solution to XP (a live mechanic
under every hood).

NT, Win2K, and XP were all designed for corporate desktops, gov't,
military, fortune-500 customers.

It's that pesky, insecure home PC market that Micro$hit can't really
provide a decent OS for. Historians will write about how M$ unleashed
the vulnerable and over-managed XP on the home market after weak
initial acceptance in the corporate world. 4 (or 5?) years later the
intellectual brain trust in Redmond has gone dry (what, they can't
come up with a new desktop motif and slap a new name on it?). Or do
they need a 10 ghz Pentium to be able to run the current bloat-ware
they have in the works?

Win-98 never needed an umbilical cord hooked up to the mothership like
XP obviously needs. I guess that's what it takes to keep XP from
eating itself up as it chugs along on the average home computer,
spewing spam right under the nose of the average idiot owner.

Right on brother! I have XP on several laptops for WiFi only. I run
Win98SE on almost all of my other systems because 1. I can easily fix
almost any problem in less than 15 minutes and 2. when the NT based OSs
have an application problem, it can take as long as 10 minutes to get
control of your system back. I can do a 3 finger in Win98SE and be back
running again in 2 minutes!

Chas.
