Is it possible to build an interactive presentation using PowerPoint?
For example, to drill in and out (to see more detailed information when I click
on a "parent" block)

You can use triggers to initiate an object's entrance if you're using PPT
2002 or 2003. With previous versions you'll have to fake it using a series
of slides.
 
Anything is possible. It depends how much effort you want to go through. Any object in PowerPoint can be clickable (right click on it and set the Action Settings). What exactly it does when you click on it is up to what you want to do and how much effort you put into it. It is simple to have it hyperlink to another slide (possibly a slide similar to the one you are on with more details about the object you clicked on). You can do some fancy animations with triggers in PowerPoint 2003. Or you can do a number of fancy things with VBA. See my web site for some examples:
