As reported before, Intel has had hinted a price drop in Q3, expecting a second price drop someday in August and September. However, the exact date turns out surprisingly on July 22 as the first hand information we have received. Undoubtedly, the move give certain impact on the sales of AMD processors. Not until the release of next-generation AM2+ processors, it’s hard for AMD to get profit from their existing products.

Tell me about it.

Is it just me, or is it on the way to getting a bit silly now? Technology is moving so fast nowadays!

Just remember those prices are the bulk manufacturer to retailer prices, and also in the US - prices over here will be somewhat higher.

However I still believe there will be some great buys to be had

True, But the E6600's dropped to $266 in the last price drop and they're available for £150.

They are new on Newegg for $226.

So, (not that i am arguing with you Ady) The Q6600 should be around £150 - £170ish? Give or take. Am i anywhere near? Having said that the US to UK exchange is always a bit of a mystery....

OR

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
£159.99
£187.99 inc VAT

This is the G0 stepping, meaning it runs at 95w rather than 105w like the one above, meaning cooler and less power and higher possible overclock.
But there not available just yet.

By the way the E6600 are not dropping in price.

Hmmm, I think i may just have to get me one of the G0's when they appear.

Do you reckon a quad processor is really neccessary on the desktop though? Dual cores only have marginal benefit (compared to the potential they have), so surely quad core processors will still struggle with single thread programs?

No its not really necessary, but i crunch! :p

No seriously, i'm still undecided about getting one, i would love one, but as you say, is it really needed? Honestly not yet altough there are some games that will use all the cores apparently, Supreme Comander, Alan Wake and Bioshock will for now, maybe even Crysis and i believe UT3 will too...But dont quote me on the last one. Oh and after the patch FSX will use upto 8 cores, or so i have read. :)

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens..

EDIT: Just found this, is worth a read.

Wow so there are some apps taking the plunge with the whole 4 core shibang

Including Photoshop and BOINC. Nice :D

I doubt we will see any games on quad core for years and years though - dual core has only just become mainstream, and now single core processors are being phased out, it is making more sense that developers start building in support.

However I doubt quad core will overtake dual core in the mainstream for a while, as in the real world away from specific apps, there is probably nowt advantage over having twice as many cores.

Haha. I still have 1 core :o :D
