I installed this program with confidence after finding it on the
Pricelessware list but have reservations about the ethics and legalities
of its use. It comes with warnings against its missuse. I would like to
sound-out the group as to what would be appropriate usage for this
software. Your opinions would be greatly valued.

The first thing that comes to mind is maybe using it to check if your
webpage has been hacked.

I believe I read about someone using it to create a web page site map.

IntelliTamper

I've used Intellitamper to find links to freeware that were on a
developer's site, but weren't evident from the homepage. For some reason,
some authors put their spillover programs (the less current ones) on a back
page and don't reference that page on their home page. Yet you KNOW those
programs are on that site, since it's the developer's homepage and that's
where you originally got the program, or someone gave you that link for a
particular program. That's the only reason I can recall using
Intellitamper, and for those few times, it was worth it's weight in gold.
As to why developer's don't reference their backpages...sloppy website
design?

I've used Intellitamper to find links to freeware that were on a
developer's site, but weren't evident from the homepage. For some reason,

Such a program is trying all possible combinations of web page names
on that web site to find all pages, even pages which are not
referenced in links.

This means that the web site gets thousands of requests during the
time intellitamper is searching.

Some web page owners may see this as an attack on their web site,
others who try to access their site may be locked out during this time
because the site is overloaded with requests.
It could also be seen as a way to find pages which are not supposed to
be available to the public.

I don't think it is wrong to use such a program occasionally.

It could be wrong if it is used all the time against a certain site to
block it.
That is the reason why there are warnings about its use.

This was the warning that concerned me. I guess my concern was that you
could face a complaint to your ISP if someone took exception to the
action (that's if they have a way to trace you?) I guess the moto is "In
moderation"?

Yes, and use a proxy server if you are worried about complaints.

Not familiar with IntelliTamper, but sounds like it has a lot in common
with offline browsers and download managers. Let me explain. (Just my
two cents.)

I consider WinHTTP a good offline browser. It requires you to override
robots.txt rules if you wish to do so. Also, you may (should) limit the
number of active sessions, space out the time between server requests,
and start the browsing at a later date/time (middle of the night) when
high traffic is less of a problem. All of these things combine to get
you what you want but still minimize the impact on a web site.

Download managers and offline browsers -- without the use of throttling
(also called "pacing") -- have the potential to beat a server senseless!
#$%^&* For bandwidth limited web pages (people trying to save a few
bucks) this is a big deal. I know of one site sometimes mentioned in ACF
where widespread use of download managers went a unnoticed and quickly
got them in trouble with their ISP and cost them some $$$. They changed
their AUP to eliminate further problems, evicted a number of members
over this issue, and now use cookies to limit sessions to one, and
session pacing to slow throughput.

I like the concept of using good judgement and moderation when using
these tools.

Really? What you describe is very different from a web spider, which
follows and downloads linked pages down to a specified level. It seems like
this program would put a much bigger load on the server.
