Intellipoint not working with adapter

My Intellipoint has been working fine while plugged into the PS2 port (round with holes) using the green adapter that came with the mouse, until today. The red light of the mouse goes off, only works intermittently. I plugged it directly into the USB port on the back of the unit and it works fine, and the adapter is okay because it works fine on another computer. Any suggestions on how to fix things so that the mouse works with the adapter in the round spot?

It's possible the actual PS/2 port on the motherboard has failed and if
that's the only failure, it's hardly worth replacing the whole motherboard
when the Intellimouse was really designed for and works with the USB port.
If you need more USB ports to run other USB devices, a USB2.0 PCI card is
cheaper and a lot less hassle than replacing a motherboard.
