Intellimouse Problems

I have an Intellimouse running on XP Pro plugged into the PS/2 port of a
Dell Inspiron 7500 notebook. I am also running Norton Antivirus 2003. For
some unknown reason, the mouse begins to act very erratically when I touch
it. After a few seconds of launching and clicking several programs, it
finally starts to work properly again. The erratic movement happens several
times per day. Any ideas on what to do?
