Mouse works fine but when I must move the pointer very
fast, the cursor will move in random directions, I have
heard that in the older versions of the Intellimouse
Optical there was a problem with defective laser
technology and that I could send mine in to get a new one,
is this true?

Sounds like you need to check your properties for the mouse. Check
the Speed settings for tracking.
Also make sure the surface your mouse is used on has some sort of
texture(ie. wood grain, patterns...)
This will sometimes effect the performance of the mouse.

I think you meant to write does *not* have textures like wood grain...

No, I meant "has" textures. Opticals mice need a broken background to read
the movement. If you have a solid background then the mouse thinks it is
not moving, therefore it will not operate properly. The more texture on the
surface the better it responds.
A good example of what I'm talking about would be to look at the ball on the
optical ball mouse(Note: not a standard optical mouse, but one that looks
exactally like a ball mouse). The Ball is full of textures so the optics
can read the movement of the ball to move the cursor.
