I have a intellimouse explorer installed on XP. I seem to
have a similiar problem as the preliminary dfescripton in

I have no way to assign any function to the thumb buttons.
They do work with default settings as "back" and "forward"
but I cannot change them when I run "mouse" in the "control
panel" and look under the "buttons" tab. The only option
available for me under the "button configuration" is
"switch primary and secondary buttons". Since I am a gamer
this is very important for me.
I do not have the drivers on a CD. WIndows update do not
find any new drivers. There are neither any on your webpages.
