Intellimouse Explorer problems

My mouse will stop working and start working 10 seconds later. I've tried
reinstalling the latest Intellimouse software and the new USB 2.0 drivers
from microsoft that came out this past week with no success. My system
consists of the following

Windows XP Pro SP 1
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
512 mb DDR RAM
Gigabyte SINXP-1394 motherboard (SiS 655 chipset)
 
I only have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, so I don't think that that is
the problem.
