I wanted to know what is the purpose of Intel Optane memory? Is it just like SSD? I mean, is it a simple storage device with extra speed which can be used for installing the Operating system and other utility software?

Or is it like RAM or other memory which is used to speed up the CPU's performance and can not be used as a permanent storage device?

I am looking for a laptop which has 16GB optane... Can I use that to install Windows on it?

Optane memory is a bit like a cache, meaning that it's a temporary buffer/storage area for frequently accessed data. If you pair the fast, solid state Optane memory with a slower mechanical hard drive, it means that you can store/access frequently used files on Optane and everything else you would access on the mechanical drive.

It's a bit of a compromise to get relatively high performance from a high capacity HDD, paired with a smaller, faster and cost effective cache.

You wouldn't use Optane as a separate drive or RAM, it works in conjunction with an existing HDD to make it faster :). This means you would install Windows as normal on the mechanical drive and Optane would speed it up automatically.

Thank you... God that... Actually, I wasn't expecting a cache from 6MB to 16 GB :D :D But I guess I should go for 16GB optane as it will boost the speed.

Thank you for the explanation.
