Hello-

I am not getting any sound in vista and I can't seem to find the correct
driver to get this fixed. I have an intel high definition sound card I think.
My pc is a gateway model gt 5040.

That model doesn't exist on the Gateway site nor can be found by attempting
a Google search. Are you sure that's the model number?

If you have an Intel motherboard, which it sounds like you do (Device
manager would be showing Intel items), then, according to this:

http://support.gateway.com/support/...wse&platform=10021&model=10610&os=10406&type=

you would need the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver. The above link,
though, lists XP drivers only. The Vista Driver for Realtek High Definition
Audio can be found here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

To make it easy, download the Vista Driver (Executable file) Version R1.50,
and then "Run as administrator", by right clicking on the .exe file.

Hope this helps,
Dean

I think I found out I have the sigmaTel chip actually. Is there a vista
driver for that card? I have previously tried that driver you listed below
without success. My device manager in win xp lists the sound as sigmatel high
definition audio codec.

Stop the presses! Further study shows my first post might be in error. If
you have XP on another partition, boot to that and check what Device Manager
shows as the manufacturer of your Sound Driver. Sorry.

No problem. In win xp , under Sound, video, and game controllers are the
following: Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices,
media control devices, sigmatel high deinition audio codec, and video codecs.

I'm looking for SigmaTel drivers for Vista, so far without success. Their
web site appears to offer nothing. I'll let you know if I can find anything
elsewhere.

Here's part of the problem

(IDT buys audio codec business from SigmaTel):

However, the Drivers are supposed to be coming down the pike,

(IDT Announces Advanced Vista Software for PC Audio Codecs):

The problem is that they are leaving it to the OEM (in your case, Gateway)
to make the driver available. You may want to try Gateway support to find
out their plans on this issue, which may not yield much, but might be worth a
try...
