This is getting totally rediculeous. TWICE now when I've had to do a
repair-install of a microsoft operating system it ends up that the intel P4
D830 is NOT recognized as a dual-core CPU! The last time was with an XP Pro
installation and this time with VISTA! I looked everywhere on every support
forum I could find and none of the suggested fixes worked, they seemed to all
be about problems with AMD CPUs. I finally ran across a list of the driver
files that were used for dual-core under XP and used a Linux live boot CD
that had NTFS write support built in to force the correct files to be used by
copying them over the hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe, and the other one I can't
remember at the moment. Then I decided to upgrade to Vista. I had all kinds
of problems with the video drivers and finally got that all working. Then I
made the mistake of attempting to remove Norton 360 from my computer because
I had suddenly lost the ability to download my email and everything I could
find on all the support forums I am on pointed the finger at Norton. What a
disaster! It took me two days to finally get Vista re-installed and then I
noticed it only had recognized the CPU as a single core CPU. I tried to fix
it the same way I did XP but the only file I could find was hal.dll and not
the others. So now what? Here's my hardware rundown:
ASUS AL8(-V) motherboard (Intel Lakeport i945P)
BIOS Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Intel P4 D830 CPU - OC 3333MHz
4x1gb Geil DDR2
2xMaxtor 6L300S0 300gb SATA HDD
Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI Controller
Quantum CP32210 SCSI HDD
2xSony DRU-720A
ATI All-In-Wonder X600 Pro video
Samsung SyncMaster 204T FPD
Wacom Intos3 Graphics tablet 9x12
Unitron SpillSeal Wireless Keyboard
Vista Ultimate SP1
