Vista RTM only enables SPDIF sound on my D975XBX board. There are no Vista
audio drivers from Intel available yet.
Using the XP drivers I get very distorted sound (chirping). Is this a
driver problem, or do I have a faulty board?

I have the same board as you peter and also am running into the exact same problem. After extensive debugging and many different driver installs (all resulting in that "chirping" sound I ended up throwing in an old SB audigy card. You do not have a faulty board, we just have to wait for intel to release Vista certified sound driver for the bad axe board.

No; I get the same and there are no Sigmatel drivers available yet. Means I
can't get 5.1 sound either, only stereo and some of the audio effects in
Windows Media Player don't work.

Vista 32 and 64bit sigmatel drivers are now available on Intels site.
The 32bit driver only worked for me after updating my bios to the newest
(1463).

If you have surround speakers don't forget to configure them using Sound,
Speakers, Properties, Enhancements, Room Correction.

I hope Intel is working with Sigmatel, or working on their own, to fix these
drivers.

There's no Dolby Digital Live, there's no multi-channel support, and there's
quite a bit of hiss over SP/DIF, which makes no sense.

My AuzenTech HDA X-Plosion at least has multi-channel over SP/DIF, although
it too hisses a bit. AuzenTech says they'll have Vista drivers out by next
week with Dolby Digital Live support, so I at least have something to fall
back on in a week, but still...

Sigmatel and Intel, I hope you're working on this...

Well, I installed the latest Vista drivers and got nothing but the lowest
quality sound, more like a chirp, as described by others. Gateway isn't
supplying any Bios updates and I'm afraid to chance using an intel bios
update that might not be compatible. I can only guess at the motherboard
number as Gateway uses an OEM version. I'm not sure if the Intel bios is
compatible and Gateway said they have no bios updates listed to take you back
to the original. At least Dell always posts the bios updates so you could
reflash if necessary. This is quite frustrating, as Intel states the driver
is MS certified. So...why doesn't it work?

Hi Peter ,

I have to disable the enhancements to clear the crackling Sound. Once the
disable is checked the sorround sound quality and all the enhancements are
gone with Audio Codecs of Integrated Sound Card 7.1 of DEL
Please let me know if you have the fix for this as no TECH SERVICE GUY FROM
DELL HAS SO FAR BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

I don't know if this help or not but I am running the D975xbx2 with the
sigmatel drivers installed about 2 months ago and am using 5.1...I do not
hear any distortion ,,chirping,,crackling or anything bad at all

I have the same board And the sound is fine .
-- I can not get my front mic jack to work.
