i have now loaded vista32 and it shows 2 cpu on the start screen but in
performance monitor and task manager it only shows one cpu? is it using both
or not? are the graphs and cpu monitor supposed to show both?

There's an option in Task Manager, under View->CPU History to turn on one
graph for all CPU's or one graph per CPU. Dunno about the Performance
Monitor.

Try also Process Explorer from Microsoft; it is from Sysinternals utilities:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

You can even set the level of tranparence (View->Opacity) on Winsows Vista.
