Just installed Vista Beta 2 but I cannot enable aero, the vista upgrade
utility informs me that aero glass should be supported for my setup but when
I run the rating utility it returns a 2.0 rating (Dell 6400, Core Duo 1.8,
Intel 945Gm chipset, 1G Ram, 30G HD partition for vista). I have searched
several forums which seemed to indicate that the Intel 945GM(950 graphics)
should support aero with 1G of RAM. Does anybody know where I can obtain a
driver for Beta 2, if one exists, and will aero run on my setup without major
system slow down.
Thanks,

Go to the Intel web site and search for the
Vista driver. You just have to be a little
resourceful!

Oh yea...that solves the problem.....NOT, where's the link you have found on
Intel's site because you seem to know that Intel is offering drivers for
that chipset, that OS. I haven't found it and I am "a little resourceful!"

Running Compaq nx6110 with the Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset
Family, Vista reports I have 256 megs of gaming video and 128 dedicated
video ram. Still AERO doesn't run.

Of course I have the latest driver.

Any luck finding?

I have searched all over the web and it appears the driver to support Vista
Beta 2 WDDM is not yet released. There is a driver that vista update
downloads which provides non-aero support for the 945 chipset but this does
not allow aero to run. Looks like I will have to wait until Dell/Intel supply
an update.

I spoke with both Intel today and HP, of course they both said they plan to
support Vista in the future.

I tried a tweak that I founds on tweakvista.com that did not work on my
machine.

Enable Vista Glass look on Unsupported Video Cards
Posted 7/20/2005 by Steve Sinchak
Microsoft Windows Vista, formally Codename longhorn has a new user interface
system codenamed Avalon. This new user interface engine greatly enhances
the look by utilizing several cool looking 3D effects. Of course, to be
able to fully utilize the new engine you need a good 3D video card on top of
special drivers, WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model).

To turn on this effect just execute c:\Windows\System32\UXSS.exe or enable
and start the User Experience Session Management Service.

1. Open up Regedit.
2. Navigate through HKEY_local_machine, Software, and Microsoft.
3. Create a new KEY called DWM.
4. In the new DWM key you created, create a DWORD called EnableMachineCheck.
5. Make sure this value is set to 0 and hardware checking is now disabled.

Quick Note: Although you can get it to run on older hardware, with the lack
of WDDM drivers available, it is going to run very slowly.

I am using 945G drivers 4543 dated 3/23/2006 and they work with Vista MCE,
However, since I do not have 1GB of RAM I don't know if aero. Are these
they drivers you are using? If not what drivers are you using?

FWIW, I have a Dell Dimension E510 that uses the 945G express chip set from
Intel (note: 945G not 945Gm)

So I'm not sure if this applies to you but it 'might' be worth a shot.

When Vista (both 32-bit and 64-bit) in installed, by default it loads a
driver call 'Intel Lakeside ' or something close to that, that IS a
LDDM/WDDM driver and it does support Glass.

However, Vista still marks the video card as an unknown. If you then have
Vista check for updates, The 32-bit version will find and install a driver
for the 945G express chipset. That driver works fine but does NOT support
Glass.

After installing the Intel 945G drivers Vista found, I wanted to go back to
the WDDM drivers. I was able to by choosing a Vista video driver. The Intel
Lakeside drivers were listed right in Vista's driver list.

Tried that tweak also and no difference to vista rating score of 2.0 (need 3
to get aero to enable).

My for machine that is running the Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset
Family I grabbed the latest driver and still no glass.

Are you saying you did a rollback driver?

Using the driver loaded by windows update, Mobile Intel 945GM Express
Chipset, driver date=13/12/2005 & version=6.14.10.4446. The drivers works Ok
with Vista including media center built into Home Premium edition but unable
to turn on the aero glass features.

Tried that by manually loading the Intel Lakeside driver but when the pc was
rebooted I could only get a blank screen so needed to do a roll back using
safe mode.

I concur, my home laptop has a rating of 2 and runs glass.

I give up on my work laptop for aero to run, I will wait, bleh.

My home laptop HP DV5135NR AMD64 can't find audio, modem or the onboard card
reader drivers.....thinking I'll put media center back on until the RC1
comes out and try'er again.
