I just bought an Intel d875pbz motherboard and noticed that the ata cable that
came with it has a broken wire near the blue connector. The broken wire is the
14th wire from one side of the ribbon cable. Is this normal or do I need to
replace the cable?

DJS0302 loudly proclaimed to the world that:

There is supposed to be ONE wire cut in that type of cable, I don't have one
handy to count if it's the 14th but that sounds about right. The cable is
fine, use it.

Cable select is the only reason I can think of for a broken wire and that is
supposed to be on pin 28 of the ribbon cable. Here is a reference that might
provide some assistance:

This is actually the wire to pin 34 (PDIAG-CBLID). This pin is used to
determine
that a 80 conductor cable is in use. Some cable assemblies do not exibit this
cut in the wire that you found, but many do. It's perfectly normal.
