Moved a 250GB hard drive to a Win2K Pro Desktop. CMOS had no problem with detecting 250GB drive. This drive has lots of Windows 2000 NTFS data on it. When it was mounted, the integrity checker found many "errors" and proceeded to delete a zillion "orphan file record segments". Drive is now totally corrupt. What have I done? Any help would be greatly
appreciated

After the boot portion has finished Win2K doesn't care what the BIOS thinks,
it is completely ignored. It's now Win2K accessing the disk 'itself'. Apply
latest service packs to ensure Win2K supports 48 bit LBA addressing. Search
the MS knowledge base for more info on the subject.

Thanks to you both for responding. The Windows 2000 Pro PC I was installing the 250GB disk to had already had SP-3 applied. I thought that 48-bit LBA was supported in this SP. What gives? Do I still need to hack the registry as per KB305098? If I do, then what happens to the existing 80GB system disk? Will it get trashed? I am a little gun-shy here and not happy that the integrity checker "fixes" disk without asking if it is OK with you
Cheers

The original sys disk will, as far as I'm aware, be unaffected - at least
mine wasn't.
Some hd manu supply a utility to run and amend the biglba reg.settings as
per kb article.
There have been some MVP posts that suggest a disk formated prior to biglba
enabled, which is then enabled and the unused space formated to another
partition, can lead to corruption. ie the suggestion being that you format
only once biglba enabled - This doesnt apply in yr case, just for info
