Integration with Exchange 2003

We want to add some of our customer's employees as contacts so our employees
can access the customer contacts as email addresses from Outlook 2003/2007.
We are running Exchange 2003 but after we add the customer contact with NO
Exchange Mailbox our users can't see the contact listed in the Outlook
Address book. What is going on? Do you have a better idea to accomplish the
same thing?
 
Did you add them as contacts in Active Directory or as users?
Because of Cached Exchange Mode and the recipient update service at Exchange
2003, you won't see them directly within Outlook. Once the Offline Address
Book is update on the Exchange server and downloaded by the clients, they
will become visible.

Another method of doing this is creating a Contacts folder in Public Folders
and set the proper permissions on it.
 
We used AD. How often does the Exchange update occur? Can it be forced?
We still see users/groups that have been deleted today being displayed in
Outlook. Can the public folder be viewed within Outlook "TO:" button
directory? How can I edit the "memorized email addresses" so I can delete
obsolete entries?

We added them as Contacts. Should they have been added as Users? They
shouldn't need Exchange mailboxes should they? We just want to reference
them for demographic information, email address, telephone number, etc.

They should indeed be added as contacts.
By default, the RUS on Exchange 2003 runs every 24 hours. You can schedule
this service to run more frequent if really needed but in most cases this is
not recommended or needed.
Outlook also updates the OAB at least every 24 hours and can be downloaded
forcefully via the Send/Receive menu. This of course will include new
entries and removes deleted contacts tool.
When you add Public Contact Folder to your Public Folder Favorites, you can
indeed also add it as an Outlook Address Book.
