When I get I try to logon to another domain over the internet (for e-mail
through Outlook Web Access, for example) through IE6, I get the "Connect
to..." dialog (which I should) with a list of values in the User name: drop
down (which is just evil).

*** How do I clear that list? ***

I've tried IE6 | Tools | Internet Options | Content | Autocomplete | Clear
forms. It doesn't work.

Hi d :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

How to clear Address Bar History (Search History)

See here
http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/issues/ch000511.htm

See this section: Instructions for Internet Explorer users
http://www.help2go.com/article58.html

or ............

First thing is when you "clear history", you need to close all your browser
windows that are opened. Otherwise it retains the autocomplete for web
address until you do so. Then reopen Internet Explorer and you should find
that it no longer performs the autocomplete.

To prevent it from happening, go to Tools|Internet Options and click the
Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web Addresses
and anything else that you don't want to use autocomplete for. You may want
to clear your "forms" and "passwords" if you feel it's necessary. Just a
word of advice, make sure you know what your passwords are before you clear
that one.

Clearing Address Suggestions in IE - Per Jim Byrd

To delete ALL Addresses in the Drop Down list, go here and download
and install Mike Burgess' DelTypedURL.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm See below for Selective Delete.

You can also get DelSearchMRU.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelSearchMRU.inf

Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete. To remove
hidden AutoComplete entries in History:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure that ALL instances of IE6 are CLOSED before you do
the install of this(these) .inf files.

A nice alternative just for selective or all Address (not Search) history
maintenance is EditURLs, here:
http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/
Here also, you must close ALL instances of IE6 for the deletions to "take".

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm
Deletes the History folder (and the index.dat file). When you reboot, a new
folder is created

Delete History folder manually:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

In order to prevent the Autocomplete from working, close all open browser
windows or it will not take effect. Go to Tools | Internet Options | Click
the Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web
Addresses and all other items you don't want used with Autocomplete.
CAUTION: Be careful clearing passwords, be sure you have them backedup

Courtesy of LuckyStrike:

Do a Deltree command in DOS:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Follow the instructions to the letter. You will be left with new Index.dat
file of 32 KB, and a newly created History folder. The same will apply if
you go the distance and do a Deltree on TIF and Cookie folders. It is
unnecessary to do that if they are in good working order.

EditURLs from

or
IE Address Bar Editor will clear selected entries.:

Tip: If you type URLs in via File> Open, instead of the address bar, they
aren't saved in the TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the
drop-down list.

Hope this helps

How to make a good newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

I logged on as Administrator to delete all of my History on my account. It
didn't help. Is this not an IE thing but a Windows thing? I'm not talking
about usernames I enter on a HTML form. I'm talking about the login dialog
when I connect to an Exchange web server that's using Outlook Web Access for
the front end. Somehow, other usernames are showing up in that list that
were entered on HTML forms. The login dialog still displays them even after
the history is toast.

First of all make sure that you have cleared the AutoComplete
passwords field. If you haven't done that you won't have removed
the pairs of items (userid/password) which can be saved from web
pages. Also since you are having difficulty with it I would try closing
all iexplore.exe windows and use the equivalent AutoComplete settings
dialog from Control Panel's Internet Options applet. To doublecheck
I verify using Task Manager that iexplore.exe is not an active process
in the Processes tab. (E.g., press Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i...)

However, I'm not sure that this would remove stored user names
from sources other than HTML forms. E.g. when I press F1 (Help)
on that Clear Passwords button it explicitly mentions only "web pages".
I suspect that user names and passwords entered into authorization
dialogs may be treated differently even though by being saved
they do seem to be related to AutoComplete somehow.

Therefore, if using the Clear Passwords button (in the safe manner
I suggested) doesn't change your symptom I would try using RegMon
to find out where those entries are coming from. In NTx they are stored
in an inaccessible subkey. Don't be surprised if you find it simpler just
to rebuild the user's profile to get rid them than try to figure out
if there is a more direct method of removing entries which have been
accumulating over the course of the profile's existence.

Hmm... maybe you could even try copying some of the old data too...

There is one other possibility that I once mentioned speculatively
and still don't know more about but it would at least give you another
research angle. I think that the information may be maintained by
the Protected Storage service. So information about repairs
or resets for it could apply as a solution for your problem.

BTW most of this is slightly off-topic for this newsgroup (ie6.browser)
so you may want to wait for comments from your other newsgroup
in your cross-post.

Good luck

Speaking of being contagious...

I rebuilt the profile. The problem apparently went into remission. It
disappeared for about a week and then came back. It must have been stored
somewhere. The link to its location was broken when I rebuilt the profile,
but now that I've been using it for a while the link has been rebuilt.

Does anybody know where this information is actually stored?

I am not talking about what goes into an html form, I am talking about
information used by the login dialog that I specifically mentioned in a
previous post.
