My windows xp won't start up. The blue page says
insurmountable boot error. Anybody know what to do?

Do you mean Unmountable_Boot_Volume?

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

Like Jupiter Jones, I suspect that your error message actually reads
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

The message should include a STOP error code of 0x000000ED and that
should be followed by 4 parameters. If the second of those parameters
reads 0xC0000032 then the problem is caused by a damaged file system
structure on the hard drive and that can be repaired fairly easily.

If you have a Windows XP installation CDROM (not a System Recovery
disk which is what some manufacturer's provide with new computers)
then boot your computer with that CD and choose the Repair (Recovery
Console) option from the startup menu. When it has finished booting
to the Recovery Console and stopped at a command prompt enter the
following command:

CHKDSK /R

That should repair the damaged file system structure and when you
reboot is should start Windows normally.

Good luck
