Insufficient memory with 2GB?

I clicked on Fax and Mail in the Control Panel, had nothing else open and got
the message:
"You need more memory or system resources. Close some windows and try
again".
Any suggestions?
 
How much RAM memory do you have on your system?

1 gigabyte is minimal and 2 gigabytes is better.

You may have a problem with insufficient pagefile space.

right click on Computer
select properties
advanced system settings (left pane)
performance settings
advanced tab
virtual memory (mine is 2345MB, I have 2GB real memory)
change
I recommend to set box to automaticcaly manage the size

Many thanks for the suggestion, but mine is also set to automatically manage
(and allocated 2345MB).

If you do close some windows and try again as suggested are you able to fax
and mail?
How much available disk space, which is also considered as memory, do you
have on your system disk?
 
With no other window sessions open I get the message.
I have a new PC with 168 GB disk free space, without any partitioning on
Local Disk (C:).
RAM is 2 x 1024MB PC-5300 667 Mhz DDR2

After reading other posts I have in turn tried turning off:
Superfetch,
Windows Search, and
(under Admin Tools, Advanced tab, Performance, Advanced tab, Change Virtual
Memory - have cleared) Automatically manage paging file size, and
for the drive under paging file size selected:
System managed size, Set
Still without any other windows open, I still get the same result

I found the mapi.dll file mentioned in your link, and noticed that it was
dated 1996. I then did a search and noticed that there are some 75 files on
c:\windows\system32 with a similar date, indicating to me that the file was
replaced when I installed Office 97.
(Why Office 97? - because I had it, and only needed to run simple
spreadsheets & Word docs, and read that others had loaded it without a
problem).

So, should I try to get a copy of the mapi.dll file only or bite the bullet
and reinstall Vista? (I have little idea as to what is involved with that).
 
I suggest that you try and get an recent copy of the file from a system at
work or from a neighbors system and copy it to your system. A newer version
of the file should not effect Office 97. A Vista repair would also probably
work but it is a lot more work.
You might even just do a search on the file name and see if there is another
copy of it on your system somewhere.
 
Have been advised by a friend that the mapi.dll file doesn't exist in the
windows directory on Vista.

I have a mapi.dll file loaded in the System32 sub-directory. It is dated
1996 so I guess it must have been created when I installed Office97.
Re-naming it didn't help either.

Taking another tack I tried ringing Microsoft's support phone line. When I
suggested the link JW supplied, I was advised that this error relates to
active servers, not my home PC. I was given no other advice than to contact
the retailer, who had sent me to the support line in the first place.

So, having gone around in circles, should I bite the bullet and have a go at
reinstalling Vista?



So,
 
Try putting a copy of the one you found in your Windows System 32 directory
in to your Windows System directory.
You could also run disk check to find any corrupted files.
 
JW, many thanks for all your suggestions to date. I tried both putting the
file in the windows directory and renaming the one in the System 32
sub-directory, with out any success. Ran disk check without any success also.
Have I exhausted you of good ideas yet?

Only one idea left and that is to go to the office.exe file and set it to
run windows XP mode or Win98 mode if that is possible.
 
I meant to say try running the outlook.exe file in XP or Win98 mode.
Also you might try the new Windows Mail program that comes as part of Vista
replacing Outlook Express.
 
JW, many thanks for persisting with my problem. I actually never chose not
to use Outlook opting for Windows Mail on Vista instead. However to give
your idea a go I tried to instal Outlook, but got an error, so reinstalled
the whole of Office. Got an error message that Outlook failed to instal, and
that Workgroup Administrator should be opened. So I tried that, but got the
message "An error has occurred at changing workgroup database." when the
system was attempting to create a file named SYSTEM.MDW on the System32
sub-directory of Windows. So the long and short of it is ... I cannot start
Outlook!

I was unable to find an Office exe file.
