Insufficient memory message

I am trying to run an old genealogy program (Roots3) on a computer with
Windows Xp. The program runs fine with data files of 30 to 50K. When I try to
run the program with a file of 820K I get the message "error---1:
Insufficent memory, class 1, at 17640." Changing the property memory settngs
does not help. The computer has 512K of memory.

The program loads and runs the large file fine on an older Windows Me
computer with half the memory.

Can anybody suggest how to correct this problem so I don't have to drag out
the old computer just to run this program?

Thanks JS. This help file has to do with compatibility which I have found
does not help. The program does run ok under Windows Xp with small data
files.

I've noticed in the past that some software
applications work better with a fixed pagefile size as
opposed to letting Windows manage the size
of the pagefile.

I think this link explains the problem you are trying to resolve
http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=760343

The clues are the need to have expanded memory and FAT rather than an
NTFS formatted drive / partition. The link does not say whether the
final suggested solution worked.

Roots3 is as I think you are aware a 16 bit programme but your problem
is not just compatibility.

Hope this helps.

Whoopee -- Your link led me to a site that included a program (DOXBox)
designed to run old DOS programs under current versions of Windows. I had
serious doubts that the program would solve my "insufficient memory" problem
but when I got everyting set up it worked fine. Not only that, I was using
Vista rather than Xp where I had got the program to work with small files. It
looks like this has solved a problem that has plagued me for years because
the file provides an index to a large paper file. Thanks Gerry and hope all
is well on the Island. Had a great visit a few years ago when we traveled
from Lizard Head to Scotland.
