Windows XP Pro SP2 joined to a Windows (2003) domain.
This machine reboots when trying to do anything at all with any network
printer. It can print to the local printer just fine, but when printing to a
network printer, the machine reboots. (Upon coming up again, I get the "The
system has recovered from a serious error..." report.)
This happens during network printer installation too -- if a user doesn't
have a network printer installed, they browse for it in the "Add a printer.."
wizard. The second they select it to add it and press "Next", the machine
reboots.
This happens if you try to delete a network printer also. Right-click on
the printer icon, select delete and...reboot. (Consequent to this, I have a
network printer installed on that machine that I cannot uninstall or do
anything else with. If you even right-click and select "Properties" on that
printer, the machine reboots.)
The reboot is quick and brutal. The screen goes instantly black, just as if
the power cable was pulled (in fact, we thought the user was accidentally
kicking the powerstrip at first).
It happens to any user on the machine, from Domain User to Domain Admin.
All other network and Internet access is fine.
I have nothing in Group Policy that would affect the administration of
printers.
It happens with any network printer -- I tried three of them. These three
printers are connected to three different machines. I doubt it matters, but
the printers are a Lanier multi-function connected to a Windows 2003 Server,
an Okidata laser connected to a Windows XP Pro machine, and an old HP
LaserJet 6P connected to a different Windows XP Pro machine.
I have run System File Checker. The machine has all updates. Anti-virus is
running and has never returned a positive.
The problem started happening a few days ago. It is is not sporadic -- it's
very easy to reproduce and completely predictable.
There have been no major changes to the machine in months. The Windows XP
install is just six months old.
