We can read your mind? What do you consider "good" and what do you consider
"stay away from"? In other words, which features do you want/don't want?

I would like to put an instant messenger on my son's computer so he and I
can communicate from half way around the world. I would appreciate
recommendations from this group as to good ones to consider and those to
stay away from.

BitWise, hands down.

That depends on your wishes.
What protocol you want to use (MSN, Yahoo, etc) ?
Should it run from a floppy ?
Do you just want to 'talk' to each other or do you want other features,
like file tranferring.
Could you live with chatting online through your browser, or do you want a
program for that purpose ?

In (e-mail address removed), this is what Newby had to say :

| Don't know about the protocol. That's why I was asking for a
| recommendation. We just want to 'talk' keyboard to keyboard.

In that case, do both of you have an AOL address or Hotmail / MSN ID or a
Yahoo ID or ICQ number. If both of you have IDs on the same protocol
(company), we can then perhaps guide you towards choosing a client. Or just
agree to create IDs for the two of you on a particular service. You might
even try checking around to see what protocol your friends might be using.

Personally, I use MSN Hotmail, Yahoo and ICQ because I share contacts across
these 3 networks. Client-wise - Miranda IM ( which needs some polishing) but
is fast and lite!

Well, I didn't want to say 'best' because best is a relative term and I
don't know how to quantify 'best'. Good is less specific and to me
generally would mean quick response, trouble free, non-invasive of privacy,
and no pop-upads. When I say 'stay away from' I am thinking in terms of
vulnerability of introducing spyware as recently written about AOL's instant
messenger. Don't want much, just keyboard to keyboard exchange.

Maybe you want to consider Pino3 and it's client. Easy enough that most
anyone can set it up...lots of features for a freebie. Technically, it's a
chat server and client rather than an IM box.

I like MSN Messenger. Some people may consider it as adware, but I don't mind
as there is only one banner (in main window).

http://messenger.msn.com . There are some alternative clients for MSN network,
but I find them to be limited (i.e. not support voice chat).

Thanks Bob. I'll check it out.

And? Can it communicate with your son's contacts on MSN or
Yahoo?

Basically the first thing you need to know is where hsi
friends are.

Round here (amsterdam) all the kids are on MSN, so there's not
much point in trying Yahoo or AOL.

FWIW

Same here (UK). I can hardly drag my 14year old son off MSN Messenger! All
his friends, and friends of friends are on it and they exchange contact
lists, files, music, pictures etc. I am under strict instructions not to
walk in front of the webcam when he's on (uncool to have the old dad
around). I make sure that anything he downloads goes through the virus
checker. He tried Yahoo which he says is OK, but none of his friends use it
so he says there is no point.

Seems good to me.

I tried Trillian as I have a few contacts on ICQ, AOL and Yahoo, but not
many regular ones, so I uninstalled it.

"Yahoo! Messenger" (<http://messenger.yahoo.com/>).

I've been using ICQ (<http://www.icq.com/>) since at least 1997. In my opinion,
"Yahoo!" is superior.

Download free Trillian Basic http://trillian.cc/ and you can set up
accounts and IM with anyone using AOL, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo.

Works great, but doesn't support webcam,

I've been using ICQ for many years. It is my favorite instant messenger.

You're using Windows so why not just use Windows Messenger or MSN
Messenger?

Why not, I don't know. I was hoping someone would tell my I should, or
should not, use a particular product. I do not have experience using any
instant messenger and posted here looking for some guidance.
