Hopefully this is a very easy question to answer. I
want to be able to set up an instant messaging service
inside a LAN. Most of the users do not have internet
access so they cannot go out to a service to log them in.
Does anybody know of a product that can be used just
inside the LAN? Can MSN or Yahoo messenger do it and if
so, how?

Greetings --

How about Win2K's two built-in products, the Messenger Service and
NetMeeting?

You can set up your own XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) server within your LAN. XMPP is an open standard for instant messaging and presence. There are server applications like Prosody, Openfire, and ejabberd that you can install on a server within your LAN. Thank you.
