Hello,

Am running a relatively old pc manufactured 2000
with windows 98 se .

HAve installed a 3com network adapter which windows
recognized, checked under devices that it appears to be
working OK

However my problem is when pc reboots the computer stalls
on startup, of if very patient will reboot VERY slowy, and
stall on shutdown.

As a PC novice I suspect this means installation of NICS
isn't always straightford.

Does it mean I have to tweak the BIOS settings ?

Thanks in anticipation.

Possible bad NIC, possible IRQ conflict, possible insufficient power... many
different resons. Try taking the NIC out and rebooting. If it boots fine,
try placing the NIC in a differetn PCI slot. You shouldn't be having
trouble installing the NIC, it should be a very straight forward and easy
install if you have even negligeble computer knowledge.

I just have one question though, how did you get onto these forums with a 98
machine? MSAS isn't compatible with 98, do you have another machine?

He didn't say what OS he's now running. These forums can be accessed via
Linux or MacOS, for example--there's nothing OS-specific about them--the
link in Help in the product is not the only way in.

Thanks for this Chris,
Well in answer to ur question its a works PC using windows
NT.

Have tried rebooting and taking out card on 98 machine,
with same problem. As u say maybe its the 3com card.
Will have to delve further.

I can recall having significant difficulties installing and uninstalling
drivers for certain series of 3com cards.

I recommend getting the latest drivers directly from them, and searching
their knowledge base or information resources for articles on manual removal
of the drivers for a given card--you may need that information, and if it is
an issue, they'll have published it.

Thanks Bill,
Suspect this may be the issue, have seen some less than
encouraging things written about installation woes with 3
com cards.
