Right as I get to the screen that says "Setup will take
approximately 39 minutes to complete", about 30 seconds
later I get a fatal error. Setup has been stopped due to
a fatal error. Windows was unable to install the
following: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

If installing from a disk, there might be a problem with
the disk. Try cleaning the disk or using another one.

Well since Microsoft rarely sends multiple copies of
Windows in each package I don't have another disk I can
use. I did look at the disk and it is squeeky clean, no
scratches or fingerprint blotches. Im thinking the disk
may be bad. Anyone else have this problem?

Kevin

P.S. If anyone else tells me to pull out my RAM again Im
gonna fling poop all over the place. And the fact that I
can't because I have only one stick and according to
Intell's website, is compatible with XP.

Can you get your hands on another copy Windows XP? From
past experience (i've seen that error myself) it usually
means a problem reading the disk/cd. That would be the
first step I would try. Another thing I would try would
be to make sure that there are no smudges or fingerprints
on the CD and last but not least get a lens cleaner and
clean your CD drive lens. There could be some dust on
the lenes that could cause that type of error as well.
Hope this will help. Good luck.

I don't know why you should pull out your RAM either.
However this is a hardware problem. Everything up to
this point is loaded into RAM. If it were me I would sure
be doing a memtest86 for about 3 to 5 passes. Then it
could be something as simple as a cable that has worked
loose. Incidentally I have never had a CD drive last more
than about 14 months. They get outdated and wore out.
good luck

It could be a timing problem between the cdrom drive and the rest of the
computer. May want to check the document located on the XP CD that
discusses various setup scenarios. Copying the CD to the hard drive and
letting setup use those files for the installation may be one way to get
setup to complete.
