Ben

i have a laptop running xp, the internal cd drive is
busted and i want to reset the laptop, i have an external
cd drive but it wont boot the rest disc from it. i was
wondering if the xp cd from my other desktop pc would work?
i can only use the external drive while windows is running.
any ideas? thanks, Ben

Hi Ben,

Most likely you won't be able to use external CD drive to boot and install
Windows. The problem is (depending on external CD connection e.g. PCMCI
card, USB connection or ...) that drivers for this device are only loaded
after Windows start to load, so you can only use it after Windows start. To
boot or install from CD these devices must be available much sooner in
process of starting computer.

Ben I don't quite understand what you are asking. As I read your post you
seem to say that the CD drive is busted on the laptop and you can't use the
external drive. If that is so then how will you be able to use the XP CD
from your Desktop PC? You have no CD-Rom support on your laptop.

Does the laptop have a floppy drive? If so use it to load the drivers for a
external USB CD-Rom device. Plato's site might be able to help you with this

sorry i should have been crearer, the internal cdrom drive
dosnt work, and i cant boot from the external drive i
have. i am trying to rest my laptop with the reset disc
supplied. as the built in rom drive if faulty i cant use
it to boot from the reset cd. the external usb rom dosent
appear in the bios, and i cant boot the reset cd from the
external drive. how can i get it to boot from the external
drive? do i need a different lead? or is it even posable?

As Miha Pihler wrote, it's not even possible
"The problem is (depending on external CD connection e.g. PCMCI

after Windows start to load, so you can only use it after Windows start."

If floppy is not connected via USB :-). I had Toshiba once that had USB
connection of floppy drive and PCMCIA connection for external CD and no
internal devices...
