When trying to install XP the process halts after the
computer is restarted with the message STOP 0x0000007B
(0xFC90B63C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000). The
Microsoft Knowledge Base has plenty of references to STOP
0x000007B errors but none applicable to 0xFC90,etc. Has
anyone else met this and what is the reason and cure?

Hi,

The other references are memory addresses, and can change all the time,
concentrate on the 0x7B error. It means that the system cannot find the boot
partition or system volume, generally due to a corrupt boot.ini file. Make
sure any bios level antivirus detection routines are disabled.
