installing xp over 98

Hi,i am trying to install xp over 98 on my laptop but i keep getting a
command prompt c:\> not sure what to type.
When i go into the bios the keyboard does not work but works elsewhere,also
the laptop does not load 98 but goes to this command prompt.
Any help would be gratefull.

Assuming:
1. Your laptop is in working order,
2. You have the right WinXP instal or upgrade disk
for the laptop (i.e. including its custom drivers),
3. You have backed up any data you want to transfer
into the new installation,
your best bet is simply to run the WinXP instal routine
from scratch (with BIOS set to defaults). The standard
routine verifies the hard drive, then formats it in NTFS
(safer than FAT32 as used by Win98.)
