Windows XP is installed on the hard drive, not the processor. Upgrading your
computer's processor (also known as the CPU) has no effect on Windows XP.
However, you might want to upgrade the BIOS.
of course windows is installed on the hard drive....an
unfortunate use of terms on my part.
I will restate the problem more clearly. I had a processor
overheat and fail. Replaced the processor. Ran on the
internet etc. until I undated xp again. after update,
explorer would not connect to internet. Tried old
processor and everything worked ok again until it
overheated again. reinstalled replacement processor and
would not connect to internet.
Replacing or upgrading a processor (or RAM, or a hard disk, etc.) should
have no effect on your ability to connect to the Internet. The fact that
your old processor let you connect (until it overheated) is probably a
coincidence. This is further borne out by the fact that you were able to
connect with the new processor.
