I want to install xp home edition on an older machine thats running xp pro.
What problems, if any should I be aware of ?
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

BassBlonde,
1. XP Home cannot natively join a domain, so it might not be useful for a
college student, or someone working from home, that needs to connect to
business/college servers.

2. There is a slight change on what files can be shared over the network by
the XP Home machine, from othe PCs on the network.

Other than that it, your XP Home PC should update and run as well as it did
with XP Pro.

Why would you want to do this?!

Do you want to wipe everything and start fresh? What is the make and
model of this "older machine"? Does it have a license to run XP Pro
(that is, does it have a Windows COA sticker with Product Key on it?)?

Its no problem if you want install in older machine. But for the first
you must format the older machine after that you can install xp home.
But I prefer using XP pro to using XP home. Because the version from XP
pro more sophisticate.
