I am running XP on a machine already, I want to replace the hard drive and re-install XP. Is there something with the activation that will prevent me from doing this? I heard that I cannot re-install XP on a different drive.

Remove XP from your old drive by reformatting it. That gets round the EULA
where you can only have one copy on your pc.
Next install your new hard drive and reinstall the operating system. You
will need to reactivate but this shouldn't be a problem. If you can't
activvate over the internet you will be given a free phone number to call
for activation. Having said that, if you haven't reinstall the operating
system or install any new hardware within the last 120 days the activation
sheet is scrubbed clean and you should be able to activate over the internet
without any problems.

wow, I have to format the old drive first, then remove it, install the new one and then install Windows XP. Internet access shouldn't be a problem, but , wow. OK I'll give it a try. Thanks alo

Dave the licence agreement states that you can only install 'one' copy of xp
on your pc. Now i assume you are going to get rid of your old drive? Now
unless it is physically impaired or you break it up there is nothing
stopping someone finding your drive in the 'trash', fitting it into their pc
and using xp themselves on your licence code. This isn't such a far fetched
scenario as it seems.
Ok, if you are going to use your old hard drive as a slave drive or similar
backup then you can always fit your new drive first and install xp and then
add you old drive as a slave afterwards. But even so you will still end up
formatting the slave drive to get rid of the old data and operating system.
An alternative would be to use drive copy software to copy the data from
your old drive to your new drive. This is ok if everything is working fine
on your machine, but you also end up copying all the rubbish over to the new
drive. Reinstalling xp provides you with a clean uncluttered system.

Think I know what you mean.wanted to do same, but ended
up do this,WD had the lifeguard, helped transfer.
1Old drive in place run xp disc to put it back like new.
2Put new drive in,transfer xp to it.
3Put new drive in as master, take old drive out.
4save old drive incase new drive fails, don't put it in
another computer or it will fail, when it tries to
register.

Your right John, I don't want the rubbish on the new drive. Thanks for your help, I will give it a try tonight. I think I will just install XP on the new drive and format the second drive and have it act as a slave drive. Wish me luck, for some reason I have a bad feeling about this, but, it will start me off clean again. Thanks alot

Dave you shouldn't need luck. The procedure is pretty straightforward. Just
make sure you have your XP product code handy and also any updated drivers
that you may need. One other tip is, don't activate XP for at least a week
or so. Wait until you are satisifed that your system is running ok. If you
defer activation for a week or so if anything goes wrong and you need to
reinstall again (which i hope you don't) then you won't have to go throught
the activation process a second time. If i reinstall, which i sometimes have
to do on a regular basis after testing beta software, i always activate the
system after about 21 days.
Anyway Good Luck! Although you shouldn't need it:-)
