Hello,

I am trying to clean install WinXP Pro on an older 1.1 gig, 512 MB, 2 Hard
drives. Windows formatted the drive fine and started to run the setup
program. However, when it gets ready to start the actual install it goes to
a dos screen and says that

NTLDR is missing. Press any key to start your CD. When I press a key it
reboots again. So I never get into the install part of the cdrom.

One person thought that the hard drive might be bad or old. It was running
Win98 fine.

Does anyone know what might be the problem or what I might try?

Thanks,

Bob

Sounds like your cd is bad - have you made sure it's clean / no sctratches
etc etc? Is there another cd you can try?

It does a simiar thing with the Win98 cdrom. The cdrom drive was
re-connected recently but I don't think it is that because it is reading it.
Actually, the cdrom drive was setup on a SCSI which was removed and the
drive was re-connected direct to the motherboard. The BIOS still says none
for the cdrom though.

Hello Pen,

The cdrom drive was hooked into a scsi card. I had the machine in a shop and
the guy suggested getting rid of the scsi card and go directly to the EIDE.
Are you saying that there is a difference in drives for a scsi vs. eide?

Thanks,

Bob

Yes I am. They are 2 entirely different animals.

What happened to the old SCSI card?
Things may have changed, but a few years ago, those things weren't all that
cheap...

Hope the Repair Guy paid you for it if he 'took it off your hands for you'!

Was this a large company, or just a small 'One man and his dog' type repair
shop?
Just so as I know who not to as k to fix my PC in the future!

Cheers, ;-)

It was a young guy and his father. It was close to me but not the kind of
place that gives confidence.

Not knowing any better, I told him to throw the card out.

Try disconnecting the 2nd hard drive...until you get xp installed.

Have a nice week...

Follow Joan Rivers' example --- get pre-embalmed!
