Hi,
I just bought a new Toshiba A100-027 Machine in London UK. It has come with
a built-in Windows Vista OS. I want to install Windows XP over it, because
most of the current mobile drivers work dont work with windows Vista. The one
which I am looking for doesnt even has its update on the internet. Can I do
that?
Thanks

No, you cannot install Windows XP "over" Windows Vista.
You would need to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP
which requires reformatting the hard drive. You would also
have to check the Toshiba support web site and see if they
offer the hardware drivers designed for your specific Toshiba
PC and Windows XP.

You would have to format and reinstall XP on that machine. It wouldn't be an
install OVER Vista, it'd be a whole new install. You would probably have to
go to Toshiba's website and download your drivers first. XP probably won't
have them, and you want them handy after you first install.

They may even have Vista drivers on their site.

Not directly installing it OVER Vista. You would have to remove Vista and
then install XP on the empty drive.
You would need a full version of XP, not an upgraded version, since you are
performing a "downgrade".

Depending on your financial resources, you may even wish to purchase a
second hard drive and install XP on it.
You could then alternate drives until you decided which OS you preferred to
use.

Thanx for your brisk reply, will that windows XP "Full Version" also format
my hard drive before installing Windows on it. What about Windows XP
professional? Will that work?

Yes, the full version will also format your hard drive. You can't downgrade
an OS. Any version of XP will work, depending on what you want to do.

But, regardless of the version, you're going to be doing a clean install,
i.e. formatting and installing fresh.

I'd say: until the Vista drivers are available (as they surely will be
soon.) I'm sure the price of Vista was built into the machine, and it
would be a shame to toss it in the rubbish just out of impatience.

Run both if you have the disk space. Vista is the future, but maybe not
for a few months yet ;o)

That is a tough question nowadays. Normally, yes, but I have heard that
Vista doesn't like to be removed and puts up a heck of a fight. If you have
alot of trouble removing it, you may have to go through these groups andd
see if there is a solution.
Windows XP Pro would indeed be a good choice.

I think a few months might be a tad optimistic :-) As I recall the original
problem was that he needed to do some actual work (as many people do I
imagine ;-) and Vista wasn't ready to meet his needs.
I simply recommened that perhaps he purchase a second drive in the interim
until Vista's problems are worked out ( or the Universe ends, whichever
comes first).

You have "heard" Vista doesn't like to be removed. That's nonsense. Now if
what you mean has to do with removing a dual boot, involving Vista there are
issues, but clean installing another OS in place of Vista is not
problematic.
