I'm trying to replace my Windows NT 4.0 with Windows XP
Home, but I keep getting a message that Windows NT cannot
be upgraded. How can I get rid of Windows NT?

Windows XP Home Edition cannot upgrade over a Windows 4.0 NT
installation. You need the upgrade version of Windows XP Professional,
otherwise a "clean install" of XP Home will be necessary.

Here's how you do it:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

As Nicholas explained, Windows XP Home will not upgrade Windows NT (or
Windows 2000). You need to use Windows XP Pro in order to upgrade the
NT based versions of Windows.

If you decide to use the clean install option for your Windows XP Home
then you can first run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard from the
XP Home CD to save your user data files and program configuration
settings from Windows NT. Save this file to a network drive, another
hard drive partition or a backup device.

Then when you have installed XP Home you can run FASTW again to import
that saved data file. MVP Gary Woodruff has written an article on
FASTW at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Good luck
